Is there something similar between the childish question ‘why did people begin to draw?’ and a problem of application the structural methods to the texts of art? Searching principles of structural image-forming in art the author expresses the viewpoint that the first idea of drawing was the same to the idea of generic concept which is the centre of the basic classification of categories. Like a generic concept the drawing is made by the person of elementary society designates a multitude of concrete individuals but is none of them. Like a division by genuses the drawing is based on such abstraction as a form. The factor which differentiates senses and singles out either concept or drawing is the indication / quality. It is determined by the importance of bunch of indications / quality in the division of forms of environment. The result of such formulation of a problem is that the origin of visual image of art can be explained by impossibility of singling out of generic concepts (and their classification) without visual representation — the image of art (because of its structure — indications and qualities, and form) can be one of  the objects which consists of the volume of a concept but really it is none of them. It is demonstration of the idea of generic concept which is the basic element of primary metastructure building immediately on the level of language. Therefore the texts of early forms of art can not be researched without including them in the context of the symbolic binary classifications, cognitive models built by means of myth and ritual. Points of this article are illustrated on material of eastern medieval icon-painting.
